Gendie Miller, 49, of Ligonier, Pennsylvania, passed away on July 23 after a tree branch unexpectedly fell while she and her husband were attending their daughter’s softball camp at Renzie Park in McKeesport. Gendie, a devoted mother and well-known supporter of youth softball, had been sitting under a tree to stay cool in the heat when the incident occurred. Despite quick help from bystanders, her injuries were too severe.
Her husband, Bill Miller, recalled hearing the tree crack and urging her to move just moments before the branches came down. While he escaped with a minor scrape, Gendie was pinned under large limbs and later passed away at Forbes Hospital. The loss stunned the local sports community, where Gendie was known for her kindness, loyalty, and constant presence at her daughter’s games.
Family friends and coaches described Gendie as a loving mother and generous person who always put others first. A GoFundMe campaign organized to support the Millers has raised tens of thousands of dollars to help with medical and funeral expenses. The community has come together, offering support as the family navigates this heartbreaking loss.
McKeesport’s mayor offered condolences, calling the event a tragic and rare accident. Gendie’s daughter, Marlee, has shown strength in the days since, telling her father, “We’ve got this.” Loved ones hope the continued support helps carry the family through this difficult time as they prepare for life without their beloved wife and mother.
