Save Energy and Money: Five Household Devices to Unplug After Use

Posted on November 27, 2025 By admin

Most of us don’t realize that a quiet drain on our electricity bill is happening right under our noses—even when everything looks turned off. Hidden throughout the home are small appliances and electronics that continue using power 24/7, silently adding dollars to monthly bills. These “energy vampires” sip electricity in the background, and although each device consumes only a little on its own, the combined impact can cost anywhere from $100 to $200 every year. Understanding which items are silently drawing power can help you make quick changes that save money without changing your lifestyle.

One of the biggest culprits is the phone charger. Even unplugged from your phone, a charger still pulls a small but constant current from the outlet. One charger alone can waste around $9 a year in standby power—and with multiple chargers for phones, tablets, earbuds, and other devices, that number can easily multiply. Small kitchen appliances follow the same pattern. A coffee maker left connected can add roughly $22 annually to your bill, while slow cookers, multi-use cookers, and similar appliances can draw $25 or more simply by remaining plugged in, even when not in use.

Living rooms and home offices are also hotspots for wasted energy. Gaming consoles in rest or standby mode are especially power-hungry; in busy households, they can waste more than $100 per year if left plugged in around the clock. Desktop computers, monitors, speakers, and printers add another layer of unnecessary energy use when left connected but idle. Over the course of a year, these office electronics can quietly contribute an additional $80 or more to your electricity cost. Although each device’s usage is small, the long-term effect becomes surprisingly significant.

Altogether, these devices can push a household’s energy waste to more than $140 per year—enough to power a refrigerator for most of that time. The good news is that reducing standby energy use is simple. Unplugging chargers, kitchen appliances, and electronic devices after use can make a noticeable difference. Smart power strips offer an even easier solution by automatically cutting power when devices enter standby mode. With just a few small habits, families can save over 1,200 kWh annually, lower their energy bills, and reduce their overall environmental impact. These small adjustments create a smarter, more efficient home—one unplugged device at a time.
